Patterns and Textures

Postby phyllis stewart on Mon Oct 06, 2003 6:20 am

Here are a few patterns that can be used as pattern overlays or as textures, depending on where you put them. I believe textures must first be made into PSD format, right? But patterns may be JPEG's, and you can load them with edit menu>define pattern.

• If you would like to add some favorite patterns that you use a lot and want to share, please post them here.

• If you know of links to some good patterns/textures, please post those links here.

Here are two versions of my Van Gogh paintstroke pattern:

Below is the pattern I made forthis tree pic posted in one of Kudbegud's members' challenges.

Here an extremely useful one that I apply to just about every "oil painting" I do. It's an embossed version of a photograph of actual canvas cloth that Steve (Trimoon) gave us at one time.

I think it would be fun to make your own watercolor textures. Just brush with one of the watercolor brushes in low opacity on a white background, and save as a pattern and/or texture. Usually, rather than using the texture filter, I prefer adding patterns in overlay mode from using the "layer styles" menu...more flexibility I think. And very quick and easy to do as well...just save your finished work as a pattern and name it, and it goes right into the list.

Phyllis asked me to post this texture tip here. It was originally in the Pretty Cottage thread.

Phyllis, the textures I've been playing with lately are from taking the photo, desaturating, save as PSD, then go into Texture, browse to your psd copy, set at 100%, and then you can make the depth however you want it. I've experimented with adding that texture at the beginning, like in this painting, or at the end, either on top of another texture or under it. Sometimes I'll add to Painter's impasto look by using this texture technique at the end. Or you can even get some far out textures by using psd copies saved from other projects, or by using percentages higher or lower than 100%.

In the hydrangea pic, I applied Posterize and then made the texture.

For the cottage, I applied the texture technique first, then Phyllis' watercolor tutorial.

This is a canvas that GIMPressionist uses that I have used a lot in the past. I created a crop and cleaned it up in a way to make it seamless so you all can use it for whatever reason you want. Just tile it up to the size you like. If you have GIMP, then use the Tile filter under Maps.

Also, just figured out how and created a custom pattern in CS2 but it's too big to post. lol

Sometimes a pattern or texture can enhance an image as an actual element of the image. This photo was of some drift wood that just begged for Photoshop's snakeskin texture to be applied to selected areas to create a snake.

Fibrous Paper.

Since I really like this new texture that I concocted, I decided to make a seamless texture out of it. I hope you will like it too. :)

Da Vinci Paper Texture

I mentioned earlier that I couldn't find any Da Vinci paper texture. I just created this seamless one using my fibrous texture that I did earlier and some other maniputions. Still not 100% happy with it, but maybe some of you might be. :)

Swampy, your snake seems to have gotten away. Up on chairs, ladies! :bluehair: Brave gents, get your snake sticks and catch the sly slitherer!

Swampy had a picture of a snake using a snakeskin pattern, but now it's gone. (Scroll up a ways.) Guess she deleted the image from the link. Too bad.

And, yes, I am afraid of some snakes, if I can't tell what kind they are, although I once had a pet garter snake.
